St.
Patrick's Day is a traditional Irish holiday in honor
of the saint credited with the spread of Christianity throughout
pagan Ireland. According to legend, St. Patrick also drove
each and every snake from the Island in ancient times, which
is why there are no snakes in Ireland today. (Actually there
had never been any snakes native to Ireland, but that doesn't
mean St. Patrick doesn't merit a celebration!)
The leprechaun, a Celtic fairy, has become
entrenched as a chief symbol for this holiday, as is the shamrock,
an ancient symbol for the triple goddess Brigit.
The St. Patrick's Day parade in Austin
is presented by the St. Patrick's Day Parade of Central
Texas, Inc. and is a production of the Grow
The People Foundation. The Parade is supported by
volunteer donations of time and effort as well as money and
in kind resources from many Central Texas individuals, businesses
and governments.
